WELCOME! Instrumental Music Programs & Color Guard 2008-2009
On behalf of the officers of the SMHS Royal Band Boosters, I’d like to welcome you and your family to our new season of incredible music making and color guard at San Marcos High School. We are very fortunate to have a group of talented and responsible students; superlative, dedicated faculty and staff to nurture their talents; and a wonderful, supportive community of parents, united in our love of our children and of great performing arts. As a first year band parent, I have been continually amazed all year not only at the quality of the performances but of their originality and intensity. The marching band and percussive theater perform original music by a brilliant composer and in the spring, the jazz and concert bands present breathtaking performances of challenging musical works. And this is not to mention the astounding success at competitions. This next year holds many exciting events for our ensembles. The marching band and color guard will be returning to the competition in Las Vegas this year and the percussive theater to Dayton, Ohio. Of course, the crowning achievement will be the performance by the concert band in Carnegie Hall. As native New Yorkers, I and the kids are especially excited about the trip. Even with full financial support from the district, a program of this level of excellence requires substantial community support. And as we know, especially with the slashing of our education budget, we don’t get full district financial support. Adding this to the high price of Diesel oil to power our semi, it’s clear that our music program faces some real financial challenges next year. It will take some aggressive fundraising as well as some imaginative thinking about ways to keep costs down. In the following pages, we describe opportunities to get involved with the program as volunteers as well as fundraising opportunities for parents and students alike. We hope that you will join us in these pursuits that not only support the program financially but also provide enjoyable ways to participate in our community. We invite you to attend the Band Boosters meetings here in the band room at 6:30 on the second Wednesday of every month, where you will have the chance to clear up any questions , express your ideas, and trade stories with other parents. In the meantime, feel free to contact me via e-mail with any questions. As ever, the Marching Band season starts as early as June 25 (a full schedule is included in this packet), culminating in full-day band camp from August 18-22. Your student should plan on attending these venues to practice. After all, is there any other way to get to Carnegie Hall? Best wishes, |
